The Hello Kitty Murder is the 1999 Hong Kong case in which a late night club hostess was kidnapped and tortured for a month, and then murdered. The woman was decapitated and her head was inserted into a Hello Kitty doll, hence the name of the case.

Fan Man-yee, a 23 year old club hostess was kidnapped by three men because she owed them some money. They planned to put her to work as a prostitute, but had too much fun torturing her instead. They beat her when they were bored. Sometimes they made her smile and laugh while she was being beaten, and if she didn’t do so, they threatened to kill her. Between them they found a use for almost every appliance and condiment. They set drinking straws alight, held down Fan and dripped melted plastic on the soles of her feet until her skin blistered and oozed pus. When they tired of that, they lit her feet directly, then beat them with a stick. Chilli oil was poured on her wounds, oyster sauce thrown on her face. She was made to drink oil. She was beaten with water pipes. She was beaten with metal bars. Often the men would piss on her face or into her mouth, beating her when she failed to swallow their urine.

Sometimes, when there was nothing on TV, they would string her up with electrical wire, hang her from a hook on the ceiling and beat her with iron bars. Then, having grown bored, they would leave her hanging there overnight. Towards the end of Fan’s life she would be left to drift in and out of consciousness either on the floor or tied up while her tormentors went off to play video games.

She died overnight in March 1999. Her corpse was cut up and her head was boiled down to a skull and then sewn into a Hello Kitty mermaid doll.

In May 1999, the 14 year old girlfriend of one of the murderers came to the police complaining that she was having nightmares and that Fan’s ghost was haunting her. The police searched the apartment and discovered a lot of gruesome evidence. The 14 year old girl also helped torture Fan. Why did she do it? “Well,” she told the court, her face blank, her voice flat and devoid of emotion, “I did it for fun. Just to see what it was like to hurt someone.”

The men were arrested and convicted of manslaughter because no one could determine for sure how Fan died. The girl did not get jail time because she testified.
